Exploring the Abandoned Paper Mill in Kanchanaburi, Thailand

During our week-long stay in Bangkok, we decided to take a train to Wang Yen. Our goal was to volunteer at the hands-off Somboon Legacy Elephant Sanctuary. After an unforgettable day with the elephants, we hitched a ride back into Kanchanaburi. I had heard whispers about an old paper factory nearby, and curiosity led us there.

Encountering the Security

Upon arriving at the Thai abandoned paper mill, we noticed security stationed at the front gate. Eager to explore, we approached and greeted him. When I asked if we could look around, he raised his hand to signal "5 minutes." I mistakenly thought he was just being friendly. To my surprise, the gesture meant we were only permitted outside.

I ventured inside, thinking I could quickly get some shots. However, the security guard's face turned sour as I lingered for more than the allotted time. Sadly, this restricted my exploration, but I did manage to capture some beautiful photographs as the sun set behind the old structure.

The History Behind the Abandoned Paper Mill

The paper mill boasts a rich history. It was constructed over 80 years ago by an unknown German engineer. The Thai Government financed its building, intending to produce pulp during the Second World War. This facility played a significant role in supporting the war effort.

Visitors can see remnants of its past, from dilapidated machinery to crumbling walls. Exploring the mill feels like stepping back in time.
